APPLICATION PROCEDURE


ART. 1
All young people citizens of the countries of the European Union (EU) or of the following countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway may take part in this competition, providing that on January 1st 2010 they are under 32 years of age for sopranos and tenors, or 34 years of age for mezzosopranos, contraltos, baritones and basses.

ART. 2
Applications (drafted on the enclosed application form) should be addressed to: “Istituzione Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto Adriano Belli”, Piazza G. Bovio, 1 - 06049 Spoleto (PG) Italy. The applicant should write his/her full name, address, voice range and citizenship.
The following documents shall be included:
a)        Copy of the passport or identity card valid for
            expatriation;
b)        Copy of the certificate attesting accomplished
            studies, issued by a Conservatory, High School or
            music school. If the studies were accomplished at a
            private music school or with a teacher, the headmaster
            or teacher has to issue on his/her own responsibility a
            declaration stating the student’s qualification and
            level of development;
c)         Applicant’s statement in writing that he/she has
            never played a main role during  the opera season of
            important opera houses;
d)        Applicant’s statement in writing of any general
            studies they have completed, or any profession or
            occupation practised;
e) Authorization for the Istituzione Teatro Lirico
            Sperimentale di Spoleto “A. Belli”, in accordance
            with D. Lgs. 196 of the 30/06/2003 to handle the
            personal data supplied in order to participate in
             the competition. These data will be used exclusively
            for the purposes of administration of this competi-
            tion. (The holder of these data is the Istituzione Tea-
            tro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto “A. Belli”);
f)         Receipt of a Euro 52,00 postal order to be sent as a
            competition admission fee to:
            Istituzione Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto
            “Adriano Belli” - Piazza G. Bovio, 1 - 06049 Spoleto
            (PG) - Italy;
g)        1 passport photograph; 1 full length photograph.

THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS is February 17th 2010. Candidates must bring to the audition a valid identification document with photograph proving citizenship as per art. 1.

ART. 3
The Institution:
a)        will not accept applications that do not include all
            the documents specified in Art. 2 above, nor those
            posted after the final deadline of February 17th 2010.
            The postmark will be proof of posting date;
b)        reserves the right to request proof of authenticity of
            certificates and declarations.

ART. 4
Under no circumstances is the competition admission fee refundable.

ART. 5
Auditions will take place at “Teatro Nuovo” in Spoleto from March 2nd to March 6th 2010. All applicants must be present at 9:30 am on March 2nd 2010 at “Teatro Nuovo” in Spoleto, without any further notice. The order of appearance will be chosen by ballot at 11:00 am on March 2nd 2010 at the Teatro Nuovo. No travel or living expenses will be refunded to participants.

 

BOARD OF EXAMINERS - EXAMINATIONS

ART. 6
The Board of Examiners, appointed by the Institution and approved by the “Direzione Generale Spettacolo dal Vivo, Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali”, will consist of 9 members:
a)        the Institution’s Artistic and Didactic Director;
b)        Eight experts chosen among singers, singing teachers,
            artistic directors of important opera theatres, music
            critics and musicologists, musical and theatre organizers.
One representative of the “Direzione Generale Spettacolo dal Vivo, Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali” of Italy will also be invited to participate to the auditions as observer.

ART. 7
The competition is divided into three parts:
Part One - Preliminaries
The applicant must present two excerpts from repertory operas, at his/her own choice.
Applicants obtaining an average of 6 marks out of 10 will pass to the semifinals.
Part Two - Semifinals
The applicant must present three other excerpts from repertory operas at his/her own choice, except for the opera referred to in letter b) below.
Applicants obtaining an average of 7.5 marks out of 10 will pass to the Finals.
Part Three - Finals
The applicant must:
a)        perform some excerpts chosen by the Board of
            Examiners from those presented for the preliminaries
            and semifinals;
b)        show thorough knowledge of an opera and be able
            to perform any excerpt of it, including recitatives and
            “insieme” pieces. The applicant must also demon-
            strate to know its  age, nature, composer and must be
            able to talk about the features of the main characters.
            For the Preliminaries and Semifinals the Board of
            Examiners will decide whether to listen to part or to
            the whole programme.
c)         Interview.

ART. 8
Accompanying pianists will be available for participants. However, if applicants prefer they can be  accompanied by a pianist of their own choice, at their own expenses.

ART. 9
The Board of Examiners is valid when the majority of members is present. It will draw up the list and will declare winners those applicants who have obtained an average mark of no less than 8 out of 10.
The Board of Examiners will also have the option to grade as “suitable” those applicants who, according to the examiners, could be engaged as per Art. 16.
The Competition will end with a Concert performed by the Winners at “Teatro Nuovo” in Spoleto on March 6th 2010 at 8:30 pm.

ART. 10
Winners will be awarded the “Livia Dionisi” Special Prize whose total amount is € 35.000,00, which will be divided into 6 prizes; the prizes will be awarded to those winners who obtain a final score of 8/10 minimum. In case the number of winners is lower or higher than 6 the total amount of the “Livia Dionisi” Special Prize will be divided into prizes of the same amount, to be given to the winners entitled to it according to the results of the “European Community” Competition, as stated above.
The Prize will be paid out at the end of the 2010 Experimental Opera Season of Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto “A. Belli”, provided that the winners actually attend the Preparatory Course .
The Prize will be handed out during a public ceremony at the end of the Experimental Opera Season 2010 of Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto “A. Belli”.

ART. 11
The “Cesare Valletti” Special Prize of a total amount of Euro 8.000,00 has been founded and will be awarded by Mrs. Nicoletta Braibanti Valletti to the winning tenor who obtains the highest mark. In case no tenor wins the competition, the Prize will be shared by the first three winning singers (apart from their vocal register), according to the marks given by the Jury, as follows:
   First classed, Eur 4.000,00
   Second classed, Eur 3.000,00
   Third classed, Eur 1.000,00
The Prize will be given to the winner/s, provided that he actually attends the Preparatory Course in 2010 and 2011, when he makes his debut in the roles assigned by the Institution within the Experimental Opera Seasons 2010 and 2011 and it will be divided in two tranches of the same amount.


PREPARATORY COURSE
DEBUT OPERA SEASON

ART. 12
The winners will attend the 2010 and 2011 five months Preparatory Courses. The Course could also include transfers for study and specialization in Italy and abroad.
The Course will include lessons on theory, acting, stage movements, singing, group exercises and preparation of several operas.
The Course will be held in Spoleto at the “Villa Redenta” estate, at the “San Nicolò Theatre”, at the “Teatro Caio Melisso” and/or in Rome or in other place.
Those applicants considered “suitable” could be called to attend the last two months of the 2010 Preparatory Course.

ART. 13
Attendance at the Preparatory Course and participation to the connected didactic activities are compulsory and free of charge. The winners of the competition will be also awarded with an Euro 850,00 monthly scholarship.
The allocation of the scholarship depends on the continuous and profitable attendance at the Course and at the debut Opera Season. In addition to the scholarship, the winners of 2010 Competition will be also awarded the Special Prizes indicated in Art. 10 and 11 of the present announcement.

ART. 14
During the whole course students may not be absent. In case, the Institution might allow brief permits for serious reasons or for documented necessity, after having asked for the Artistic-Didactic Director’s advice. Students cannot be absent during opera rehearsals or recitals.

ART. 15
2009 and 2010 Competition winners who have attended the
Course will debut in the 64th Opera Season that the Institution will stage within 2010.
Performing the roles decided by the Artistic-Didactic Director, is compulsory.
Praiseworthy students or those chosen by the Artistic-Didactic Director will take part in the Regional Opera Season of Umbria, if staged, with performances in the main cities of the Region (Perugia, Terni, Todi, etc.).
Other performances could take place in main Italian theatres, such as “Teatro dell’Opera di Roma”, “Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino”, “Teatro Comunale di Bologna” and “Arena Sferisterio di Macerata”.

ART. 16
The Institution reserves the right to use for vacant roles those students considered “suitable” by the Board of Examiners of this Competition, or the winners of previous competitions of the “Teatro Lirico Sperimentale” or the winners of other competitions as long as they are citizens of a European Union country or of the following countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or singers chosen in auditions especially organized by the “Teatro Lirico Sperimentale”.

ART. 17
During the Preparatory Course and the Opera Season  participants undertake to be available for concerts, opera performances, television or radio recordings (partial or complete), and for any other event organized by Teatro Lirico Sperimentale in Italy and abroad, without any further remuneration.

ART. 18
Application to this Competition implies the acceptance of all the provisions in this announcement and, therefore, obligation to fully comply with them. 

ART. 19
Students who do not attend the course regularly,
who do not apply themselves, or who seriously breach the regulations will be asked to leave the course, with consequent loss of any right or benefit.
Students who do not fulfill Articles 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 will loose the rights specified in this announcement and will have to refund any scholarships and prizes received, as well as paying compensation for damages.

ART. 20
Any measures taken by the Institution, or any decisions and resolutions of the Board of Examiners are irrevocable.

ART. 21
In case of disputes only the Italian version of this announcement will have legal value. Any legal lawsuit will be submitted for settlement to the Court of Spoleto. This competition announcement is subject to the approval of the “Direzione Generale per lo Spettacolo dal Vivo, Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali” of the Repubblica Italiana.
