The six winners
of the 63rd edition of The “European Community” Competition for Young Opera Singers organized by Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto “A. Belli”
Spoleto, March 8th 2009. The International Jury of the 63rd edition of the Competition for Young Opera Singers organized by Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto, presided over by tenor Luis Alva and composed by soprano Eva Marton, baritone Renato Bruson, by conductor Mats Liljefors, representative of the Hermitage Music Academy of St. Petersburg, by tenor Ki-Chun Park representative of the City of Schwetzingen, by Alessio Vlad representative of the Fondazione Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto, by Carlo Donadio representative of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, by Michelangelo Zurletti, Artistic Director of Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto, had decreed the winners:
Ivo Yordanov, baritone, aged 28, born in Varna, Bulgarian, score 9
Annalisa Stroppa, mezzo, aged 28, coming from Brescia, Italian, score 8,36
Francesco Landolfi, baritone, aged 31, coming from Caserta, Italian, score 8,36
Ziyan Atfeh, bass, aged 32, born in Damasco, living in Modena, Italian, score 8,21
Annamaria Pennisi, mezzo, aged 26, born in Catania, living in Savona, Italian, score 8,07
Deborah Leonetti, soprano, aged 28, born in Lugano, Italian, score 8,04
The Jury has also decreed idonei (literally, “suitable”) Bulgarian soprano Doroteya Doroteeva, aged 26, and Italian tenor Giuseppe Talamo coming from Caserta, aged 28.
The 6 winners will be admitted to attend a two-years specialization course during which they will acquire a scenic and vocal specialization; the course will be held in Spoleto and the teachers will be renowned musicians and singers, among whom: Renato Bruson (interpretation), Carlo Palleschi, Enza Ferrari and Marco Boemi (music scores), Giorgio Bongiovanni, Giorgio Pressburger and Marco Carniti (acting and stage movements).

At the end of the course the winners will make their debut within the Spoleto Opera Season and the Umbria Opera Season, organized on purpose by Teatro Lirico Sperimentale.
They will receive a monthly scholarship of EUR 850 besides the “Livia Dionisi” Special Prize founded by Leonardo Caltagirone Group. The prize consists in scholarships for a total amount of Euro 30.000, which will be equally shared among the 6 winners.
The Competition of Teatro Lirico Sperimentale is one of the oldest and most renowned at an International level; throughout the years it has “given birth” to many of the major opera singers, among whom just to mention some: Franco Corelli, Cesare Valletti, Antonietta Stella, Marcella Pobbe, Anita Cerquetti, Anna Moffo, Renato Bruson, Ruggero Raimondi, Leo Nucci, Mariella Devia, Lucia Aliberti, Giuseppe Sabbatini, Sonia Ganassi, Daniela Barcellona and many others.
The singers who have won the Competition, besides making their debut within the Spoleto and Umbria Opera Seasons, will have the chance to perform during international tours and concerts abroad, as it has happened in the past years, thank to the agreements of collaboration Teatro Lirico Sperimentale has signed with musical institutions and foreign theatres in Japan, Russia, etc.
The competition has been possible thank to the collaboration and support of: Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activity, Region of Umbria, Province of Perugia, City of Spoleto, Agency for the Touristic Promotion of Umbria, Cassa di Risparmio di Spoleto Bank Foundation, Banca Popolare di Spoleto, Leonardo Caltagirone Group.
